Music Review
After the stupendous success of Rang De Basanti, which has become a kind of cult film, there are a lot of expectations attached to Rakesh Mehra's next, Delhi 6. The music of this film too has been composed by the man in the news these days, AR Rahman. After the global success of the music of Slumdog Millionaire, there is no way in which Rahman can sound or even afford to sound less than spectacular. Thankfully, he fulfills all expectations every single time and comes out tops. The music of Delhi 6 manages to be different it is eclectic and at the same time belongs to the popular genre. This is an album which consists of nine numbers, each different from the other as night from day. There is a traditional aarti, a sufi style piece, as well as a semi-classical number, in this album, all this in an era when we talk of the loss of melody in our film songs. The lyrics all been written by Prasoon Joshi, who brings a fresh sensibility to the songs with his unique choice of words.
The album opens with the number 'Masakali' sung by Mohit Chauhan. This is a number which has already started creating a stir as it has been extensively used in the film's promos. Mohit excels in singing this song, where the instrumentation is kept to a bare minimum, bringing into limelight the singer's rich vocals and his skills. Well, both are excellent and this number has that typical whimsical quality that Rahman is famous for and is sure to go ahead and become one of those memorable numbers. The song is light and playful in mood and the singer does full justice to it.
The second number of the album is 'Arziyan' sung by Javed Ali and Kailash Kher. It is a long number, totally devotional in nature and, again, depends entirely on the vocalists' ability to carry the song through. The only accompanying musical instruments are the traditional harmonium and the tabla. The effect is mesmerizing to say the least. The number, which is opened by Javed, with Kailash joining in subsequently, has one spellbound. It transports one to the spiritual realm and keeps one absolutely enthralled for the entire duration.
Rahman opts for a quick change in mood with the next number, the title track, 'Delhi 6.' This number is contemporary and youthful in nature with a very catchy quality attached to it. It is sung by Blaaze, Benny, Viviane, Tanvi and Claire, and one is sure that the singers had a blast rendering it, as one can almost feel the energy and vibrancy of the number. Its lyrics, which have been written by Benny & Co are a mixture of English and Hindi and very catchy as well.
Romance makes its entry in the album with the next two numbers, the first of which is 'Rehna Tu' sung by Rahman himself. The melody is very Rahmanesque in a way, as it is a blend of Western and Eastern elements. Rahman's vocals seem to be made for this song and the rendition is as close to perfection as it can get. The next number 'Dil Gira Dafatan', keeps up the mood created by Rahman's vocals with singer Ash King almost matching up to the maestro's magic. Again, a bare background score, high on melody, this is another number which is outstanding. Ash is brilliant supported by Chinmayee in this number.
'Yeh Kaala Bandar' sung by Karthik, Naresh, Srinivas and Bony Chakravorty, makes it like a boy's night out. This song has the same exuberance that Delhi6 managed to create. In a sense, it is an extension of that mood.
'Genda Phool' sung by Rekha Bharadwaj, Shrradha Pandit, Sujata Majumdar and VN Mahathi reveals Rahman's mastery over different forms and the manner in which he manages to blend two forms together so seamlessly and create a heady cocktail like 'Genda Phool.' When the song begins, it is seems like one of those rustic-folk kind of numbers, but minutes into it and Rahman transforms it as he manages a fusion with Western elements, changing the total nature and feel of this song. The female vocalists all do a fantastic job, specially Rekha Bharadwaj. The song has been used courtesy Raghuvir Yadav and sees Rajat Dholakia coming in as an additional composer.
Indian classical music makes it entry into the music of Delhi 6, in quite an unadulterated form with the number 'Bhor Bhaye.' The song is a based on the morning raga, Gujri Todi and has been sung by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal. While the Ustad is in great form in the song, the one who manages to spring a surprise is Shreya Ghoshal, who reveals her mastery over the classical medium with the number. It is rare to see this kind of flair for both classical and playback singing in such a young singer. The song is enhanced by the first-rate singing by both the vocalists.
The final number on the album is a traditional aarti, 'Tumre Bhavan Mein, which again sees the female brigade of Rekha Bharadwaj, Shrradha Pandit, Sujata Majumdar and Kishori Ashok Gowariker come together for a soulful rendition. It resonates with memories of the past and is sure to be used very effectively in the film. It is simple, pure and quite soul stirring.
The album ends with Amitabh Bachchan coming in to recite Prasoon Joshi's poem, 'Noor.' There are some things that nobody else but Bachchan can do and poetry recitation is one of them. His God-gifted voice, finely honed recitation skills and command of the language are now a part of history. But they still have the capacity to surprise you pleasantly.
Rahman continues his winning streak with Delhi 6 as well. There is variety, innovation, energy, romance, devotion, and of course melody, running through the veins of all the numbers in this album. The numbers which truly stand out, however, are 'Masakli, Rehna Tu and Arziyaan.' They are masterpieces created by the grandmaster of music. This is an album which is bound to do very well. It is a fantastic mix of the commercial and the eclectic. Another first-rate score from Rahman.!
